The Genesee Career Institute placed first at the Michigan-wide Drill Competition held in December 2018. The event was hosted by Cass Technical High School in Detroit.

Cadet Garrett Bois from Byron High School led our first-year (LET 1) cadets to 1st place in the squad drill event, and Cadet Samuel Dunkley (Linden HS) prepared the inspection team, who also won their event. Our Color Sergeant, Cadet Madisen McDaniel (Lake Fenton HS) led our Color Guard to a 3rd place finish, and Aushton Atkin’s (Swartz Creek HS) Platoon Drill Team finished 3rd as well. Our Squad Drill Team placed 6th as well.

Hundreds of cadets took the floor for the individual drill competition, and Cadet Damon Smeltzer from Carmen-Ainsworth High School was named as the first-year (LET 1) champion! The runner-up in the state was Cadet Allison Bell-Green from Swartz Creek High School. Also placing in the individual competition were Cadets Caleb Nolan (7th place-Grand Blanc HS) and Schultz (9th – Goodrich HS). In the Varsity Individual Competition, Cadet Austin O’Hare (Genesee) placed 6th and Cadet Brooklynne Desjardins (Fenton HS) Placed 9th.

We are proud of our drill team, as they proved to be best in the state in only their second year of the program. We defeated powerhouse schools such as Detroit Cass Teach, Detroit Renaissance, Wayne Memorial, and Lincoln Park, who qualify for the National Drill Competition regularly. Our win leads us to the Regional (5-State) competition, and possibly qualifies us for the National Championship at Louisville, Kentucky.
